Hedge cutting & reduction
Routine hedge trimming keeps height and faces tidy; the main cut for most informal hedges is late summer, once nesting season is over, while formal hedges are usually done twice a year. A heavy hedge reduction — cutting an overgrown hedge hard back in both height and width — is best done in winter while deciduous hedges are dormant and can recover.
It is an offence to disturb nesting birds, so we avoid heavy hedge work between March and August unless we've checked there are no active nests. A tree surgeon who knows that is one worth using; it's a common way for the careless to land a homeowner in trouble.
Pricing runs from around £50 for a small trim up to £700 for a big reduction, or roughly £150–£200 a day. We chip and remove the clippings, or leave them if you'd rather compost them.
