What we do

Tree work, done properly.

From a single overhanging branch to a 60-foot fell tight to the house. Qualified, insured tree surgeons covering York and the surrounding villages.

Dormant-season tree work in York, the right time to fell, reduce or pollard.

What June is for

June: plan the winter work, prune the summer trees.

Most heavy tree work is still on hold for nesting season, so June is the month to get ahead of the autumn rush. Book your felling and crown reduction now and you will be at the front of the queue when the dormant season opens. Diaries fill fast from September.

There is summer work that suits June, though. Cherries, plums and other Prunus are best pruned in summer, not winter, to avoid silver leaf disease, and young trees benefit from light formative pruning now. If a tree is protected, this is also a good month to get the TPO application in so consent is ready before the leaves drop.

So if you have a tree that needs doing, tell us what you need and we will get you a free quote and a proper plan for when the work should happen.

Before you cut

Do you need permission?

York has more protected trees than most cities — a large conservation area across the centre and suburbs, and a lot of Tree Preservation Orders. It matters, because cutting a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence, with fines of up to £20,000.

You need the council's written consent before work if: the tree has a Tree Preservation Order (TPO); or it stands in a conservation area and its trunk is more than 75mm across (you give the council six weeks' notice). Dead and genuinely dangerous trees are exempt, but you still have to notify the council. A felling licence can also apply to larger volumes of woodland work.

It sounds like a headache. It isn't, because we handle it. We check the TPO and conservation-area status for your tree before we quote, tell you straight whether consent is needed, and submit the council application for you. Send us your address and we'll tell you where you stand.

Much of central York sits in a conservation area, so protected trees need consent first.

Questions

Things people ask.

How much does a tree surgeon cost in York?

Most domestic tree jobs in York land between £150 and £1,500. A typical day with a full team is around £350–£500, stump grinding starts under £150, and emergency call-outs from around £400. Price depends on the tree's size, access, height, whether it needs rigging near buildings, and the volume of waste. Every quote is free and itemised.

Do I need permission to cut down a tree in York?

Possibly. If the tree has a Tree Preservation Order, or sits in a conservation area with a trunk over 75mm across, you need the council's written consent first — and York has a lot of conservation area. We check this before we quote and handle the council application for you. Felling a protected tree without consent can mean a fine of up to £20,000.

Will you clear up and take the waste away?

Yes. The tree surgeons we work with are registered waste carriers. Brash is chipped on site and all arisings removed, unless you'd like the logs or woodchip left. Lawns and beds are protected and the site is left clean.

Are the tree surgeons insured and qualified?

We only work with tree surgeons who are NPTC / City & Guilds qualified, carry at least £5 million public liability insurance, and are registered waste carriers. Certificates are available on request.

When is the best time of year for tree work?

Winter (November to March) is prime for felling, crown reduction, pollarding and hedge reductions, while trees are dormant. Heavy cutting is restricted March to August because of nesting birds, and trees with bat-roost potential need a survey first. Storm and emergency work runs year-round but peaks over winter. Stump grinding and surveys can be done any time.

Will the tree grow back?

It depends on the work. A full fell plus stump grinding is permanent. Pruning and crown reduction are managed maintenance — the tree regrows over a few years, so reductions and pollarding are repeated on a cycle. We'll tell you honestly what to expect for your tree.
